What is a Capsule Wardrobe, and how to get started?
Have you heard of the 333 Project or the concept of a capsule wardrobe? I first learned about it a few years ago when I was diving into a minimalist lifestyle, but I never fully committed to trying itโuntil now. Itโs often said that we wear only 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. That raises an interesting question: why do we hold on to clothes we rarely wear, and why do we keep buying new ones when we barely use what we already own? Is there a clear answer to these questions? I donโt think so. However, I do believe there are ways to interrupt the cycle, reset our habits, and become more intentional with what we choose to keep and buy.
Now we begin. The โ333โ stands for 33 items worn over the course of 3 months. This is where the real challenge starts: going through your entire wardrobeโnot just to narrow it down to 33 items, but to be intentional about what you truly need. Start by dividing your closet into three piles: donate, stow away, and wear. As you do this, think carefully about your daily life. What does a typical day look like for you? Make sure you set aside a variety of clothing that supports your everyday needs. Do you have meetings, date nights, or special occasions coming up during these months?
Iโll start by sharing how I approached the project. I didnโt create my capsule wardrobe overnightโI eased into it. First, I went through my closet a few times with the sole purpose of pulling out items to donate (and I had a lot of clothes!). Once I felt like I had cleared out a significant amount, the idea of building a capsule wardrobe felt far less overwhelming.
Next, I made sure all of my laundry was washed and put away so nothing would be overlooked when choosing my go-to pieces. Once everything was back in the closet, I took it all out again and began selecting my capsule items. I started with a couple pairs of my favorite jeans, at least one blazer, and a few everyday tops. From there, I added four pairs of shoes, four jewelry items, and filled in the remaining spots with versatile clothing.
Since I live in Florida and itโs warm most of the year, I focused on lighter pieces but still made sure to include at least one long-sleeve top. After finalizing my selections, I packed away the remaining clothes in a bag or stored them in a separate section of my closet for the duration of the project.
Wowโdid that feel good! Being able to see all 33 items at once instantly brought a sense of clarity. My mind already feels lighter, less stressed, and more organized. I feel refreshed and genuinely excited to put this to the test. (Quick side note- I did not count my wedding ring, sleepwear or work out clothes).
